7 Ways to Prevent Diabetes in Islam

Diabetes is a prevalent problem that absolutely forbids you from eating anything sugary. It can also be referred to as an absolute nightmare! One might even feel like this disease makes the ever delicious sugary treats haram. You must be thinking, "Oh Allah! I can't survive without my beloved treats!", yes dear brother/sister, it is truly a tragedy.

Due to the malfunctioning of one's body regarding its reaction to insulin, a hormone that ensures the proper mixing of glucose into the blood, one's blood sugar level might increase to such an extent that it might even become fatal for you! I see you must be planning on grabbing a misbaha to start repenting now that you're almost on the verge of death but fear not! Because Islam always has your back. Enough faith in Allah and his cure for any disease there is, besides death, is something that we should have enough faith in.

So stop worrying about going to Jahannam and follow the 7 tips below to prevent and get rid of diabetes according to Islam!

Tip 1 - Surah Al-Isra (Verse 80)

We aren't perfect Muslims and we know that. But before looking up some random website with an English dude explaining to you the different stuff he's tried to fix his diabetes, go ahead and read this verse first because Quran, for sure, holds all the answers!

"My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority." [1]

Suggested by many learned Islamic scholars out there, this verse is sure to help you both prevent and cure diabetes if you keep on believing in it firmly and reading it continuously.

Tip 2 - Olive Oil

If you didn't know already, olive oil isn't just used for cooking, it has countless other uses and one of them is treating diabetes! As said by the Prophet PBUH:

“Eat olive oil with your bread, and oil yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree.” (Ibn Maja, At’ima, 34).

Taking two spoonfuls of olive oil both before going to bed and after waking up, for a period of 15 days consistently, can work wonders! Why look for other methods when you could just borrow some of that cooking olive oil and fix yourself up with it? [2]

Tip 3 - Onion Seeds/ Cumin

The importance of onion seeds has been made obvious on various occasions by the Prophet PBUH. He even stated:

“In the black seed is healing for every disease except death.” (Sahih Bukhari). [3]

This heaven-sent seed is known to normalize pancreas and stomach secretions, thus directly aiding your body in fixing your diabetes. So run over to your nearest store now and fill your bags up with cumin because it's sure to fix you up perfectly! [4]

Tip 3 - Honey and Cinnamon

Honey has been given quite a lot of importance in Islam. According to Ibn 'Abbas, the Prophet PBUH said:

"Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing)." But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire." (Volume 7, Book 71, Number 584). [5]

Combined with one spoonful of cinnamon, honey can work wonders on your body! This duo provides just the right amount of sweetness and promotes glucose metabolism, levelling your blood glucose level. Honestly speaking, you should ditch your life for sugar and opt for honey, make Pooh Bear your role model and live healthier! [6]

Tip 5 - Almonds

Did you know, almond isn't only known for making you brainy? Almond is one of the most mentioned dry fruits/nuts in various sayings due to its countless benefits. It is known to regulate your blood sugar and improve your body's sensitivity to insulin. More or less like other types of nuts, it contains fibre and minerals that would help you escape the doomed clutches of diabetes! [7]

Tip 6 - Vegetables

Prophet PBUH generally preferred vegetables over meat and other foods. [8] Vegetables, especially green leafy ones have a greater amount of fibre, carbohydrates and bouts of vitamins that ensure proper internal regulation without impacting your blood sugar level! A diet with vegetables in it is bound to give you all the nutrients you need all the while keeping you sated. So stop making faces at vegetables right now and ditch fast food (gosh, typing that hurts too) to get a better and healthier lifestyle! [9]

Tip 7 - Yogurt

Ever tried dieting before? You must've heard of yoghurt's amazing weight-reducing properties then! But if you're a mumbo jumbo fatty then you must've not realized how amazing yoghurt is!

"…We give you to drink of what is in their bellies ... pure milk, easy and agreeable to swallow for those who drink." (Surat al Nahl, 16:66). [10]

How great is that? Yoghurt does not only provide you with the essential nutrients but also works to keep your insulin levels under control. Get yourself some fresh yoghurt now (and please do not add any sugar in it to make it sweeter, we've already gone over that!).

Now that we've provided you with enough preventive and fixing measures for your diabetes, you won't have to worry about not satisfying your craving for sweet stuff! So go ahead and get yourself that sugar-rich ice cream shake that you've been daydreaming about all day long- but do keep in mind to take appropriate measures, we don't want you to say goodbye to the world this early!
